When deciding to get a wolfdog puppy or adult you MUST do your research on the breed and the source of where you are getting the animal from. It is always nice to adopt a wolfdog from a breed specific rescue but its not always possible to adopt from a shelter. Even in states where wolfdogs are legal the animal shelters might not be allowed to adopt them out to the public.
BREEDERS: If you have decided to purchase a puppy from a breeder you need to watch out for a few things. Reputable wolfdog breeders will want to talk with you on the phone several times, meet you in person, allow you to see the adult wolfdogs/parents, answer all your questions and make sure you are prepared to own a wolfdog. Depending on how young you are getting the puppy, it should be seen by a veterinarian, dewormed and vaccinated. It is always important to sign a contract with the breeder, reputable breeders will REQUIRE they take the dog back if for any reason you are unable to keep it in the future.
If breeders fail to do any of these things than that's a red flag. A breeder who will not allow you to see their home or the adult wolfdogs is most likely hiding something.
Here is a list of some wolfdog rescues who adopt them out to wolfdog legal states:
