Wolfdogs like pure wild wolves eat a primarily carnivorous raw diet, meaning they mainly eat meat and bones. Like wild wolves, wolfdogs can eat several pounds of raw meat in one sitting. While they do eat some fruits and vegetables( pumpkin, blueberries, water melon, carrots etc.), their main food source is meat. They do not need nor can their bodies process the high amounts of carbohydrates and fillers that are in the generic brands of dry dog kibble.
With that said, Many wolfdog owners feed their dogs a high protein dog kibble and supplement with meat. High Protein kibble is a must, otherwise they can get chronic diarrhea and other health issues.. Chicken legs, turkey and beef are all great choices. Pork isn't a great choice as it is too high in fat and can cause digestive issues. A raw diet also includes raw bones which provides the dog with calcium and other vitamins. It also helps keep their jaws strong and teeth healthy. Cooked bones on the other hand you must never feed a dog, they will splinter inside the dogs stomach and cause complications.
While buying meat products from a store is the safest way to feed your wolfdog sometimes finding a natural food source is a nice option. In many towns you can contact your local animal control or fish and game department to get on their list for road kill deer. As long as it is fresh and fed the day that it was killed it is safe for wolfdogs to eat. Do NOT feed road kill if it has been sitting for more than a few days, Make sure that if you ever change your dogs diet to do it slowly and gradually as to not upset their stomach.
Also make sure you provide water(change daily) at all times for your wolfdog especially since they live primarily outdoors with extreme changes in weather and temperature.
Dietary supplements and vitamins can also be beneficial to add to your wolfdogs diet. Glucosamine is great for their joints while fish oil is great for their skin and coat.
